Make Your Site Rank Better in Google with This One Weird Trick

Okay, maybe not. But if your website isn’t optimized for mobile viewing (one of the most popular ways to do this is through “responsive” design), you could soon see your rank in Google’s search engine drop. Our Search Overlords announced earlier this year that, starting on April 21, they’ll be taking “mobile friendliness” of sites into consideration on mobile searches, meaning that sites that are optimized for mobile devices will likely be ranked higher than sites that are not.

Google calls this change significant. It will make it easier for mobile users to get website content that is optimized for their specific mobile device. Google’s own research shows that 94 percent of Americans with smartphones search for local information using their phones, with 77 percent of them searching on mobile devices at home or work, even when a computer is available.

In fact, 79 percent of Americans with smartphones use a mobile internet browser daily on their phones. If your site isn’t optimized for mobile traffic, these users aren’t able to easily access the content on your site, meaning they’ll look elsewhere for information.

So what’s a website owner to do?

For starters, learn if your site is optimized for mobile traffic by visiting Google’s mobile-friendliness test website. Type in your website address and Google will analyze it and let you know how mobile-friendly your site is and how it is viewed by a mobile browser.

If your site fails the “Mobile-Friendly” test, it may be time to consider updating your site. Never fear! The fearless Covalent Logic masters of website design can help find solutions for how to make your site mobile friendly so all of its users have a pleasant viewing experience.
